Senators on Wednesday prodded Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Francisco Duque III to immediately facilitate the release of the compensation appropriated for the medical frontliners who died due to COVID-19 and those who contracted the disease while in the line of duty.
In a letter addressed to Duque, the senators, led by Sen. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, chair of the Senate finance committee, strongly urged the Secretary and the DOH to immediately release the cash aid which is provided under Section 4 or Republic Act No. 11469 or the “Bayanihan to Heal as One Act.”
Under the “Bayanihan” law, a public and private health worker who died while fighting the pandemic is entitled to P1-million worth of compensation, while those who contracted the disease but were able to recover can receive P100,000. “While no amount will ease the loss of the families of our deceased health care workers and those who contracted severe COVID-19 infection, it is our belief that the amounts stated under the law will at least alleviate whatever financial burden they may encounter,” the senators stressed.
“It is utterly disappointing that the compensation due them has not been claimed by our brave health care workers or their families for more than two months since its enactment,” they said.
