The letter to Acting Administrator Chris Rochelau, first reported by Reuters, described the “urgent need” to address air controller staffing shortages. An FAA report obtained by the Associated Press following the January crash said air traffic control staffing at Reagan National Airport was "not normal" at the time of the incident.
Rochelau and the FAA must cooperate with Congress and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association to increase funding, expand training and modernize equipment to prevent similar tragedies in the future, the senators added. President Donald Trump prior to the collision issued a memorandum freezing federal government hiring. The memorandum noted positions related to public safety and national security were exempt from the directive.
