During Eric Scott Turner's confirmation hearing for Housing and Urban Development Secretary, Senator Bernie Moreno pressed him on the impact of illegal immigration and the Biden administration's policies on housing affordability. Moreno invited Turner to visit Cleveland's public housing to witness the conditions firsthand.

U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno on Thursday questioned Donald Trump 's nominee for Housing and Urban Development Secretary, Eric Scott Turner , about the affordability of housing. Moreno suggested that illegal immigration contributes to rising housing costs and invited Turner to visit Cleveland's public housing after his confirmation.

'There are housing projects in Cleveland, that if we put illegals in those projects, we’d be sanctioned by the UN for human rights violations,' Moreno said during Turner's confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs. 'I would like you to see those firsthand. These are conditions that no human, let alone an American citizen, should ever be allowed to live in. And it’s gone on, quite frankly, as you know, a lot of people make a lot of money as a result of those kinds of conditions. I’d love to have you come to Cleveland to see that firsthand.'Moreno argued that there is a 'denial' about the impact of undocumented immigrants on housing prices. He stated that adding 12 million undocumented individuals to the country could drive up housing costs. Moreno cited a U.S. Department of Homeland Security report showing a surge in illegal border crossings following the Biden administration's relaxation of Trump-era restrictions. The report also highlighted a 18% increase in homelessness from 2023 to 2024, with some communities attributing the rise to increased asylum seekers. Turner acknowledged that millions of undocumented immigrants entering the country would strain the economy, housing, and healthcare systems. Moreno also blamed the Biden administration's fiscal stimulus efforts for driving up interest rates, making loans for home purchases more expensive. Turner, however, proposed regulatory reform, reducing construction material costs, and expanding opportunity zones as solutions to address housing affordability. He also emphasized the importance of involving the private sector in these efforts
