U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno , a Westlake Republican, re-enacts taking the oath of office from Vice President Kamala Harris . WASHINGTON, D. C. - Westlake Republican Bernie Moreno was sworn in as Ohio’s newest U.S. senator shortly after noon on Friday, amid a whirlwind of celebrations with his family members and political supporters.
Harris also swore in all the other U.S. Senators who were elected in 2024. All U.S. House of Representatives members were also sworn in on Friday. Ohio’s only new U.S. House of Representatives member isMoreno said he started the day with his immediate family, and then held a roundtable in his office where he thanked his political supporters. After he was officially sworn in on the Senate floor, he held a reception.
Moreno was assigned to occupy Desk 51 in the legislative body, which he says was appropriate because his victory in November gave Republicans the 51st seat they needed to win a majority. Moreno passed the U.S. citizenship test when he turned 18 and worked for Saturn, a now-defunct General Motors subsidiary when he graduated from University of Michigan.
His bid to unseat Brown two years later took off when Trump endorsed him, helping him to defeat state Sen. Matt Dolan and Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose in 2024’s Republican primary. He said his other priorities will include securing the U.S. border, lowering prices for consumers and shrinking the federal government.
