The US Senate narrowly passed the National Defense Authorization Act, despite a contentious debate over a provision restricting gender transition healthcare for military dependents.
The Senate passed the 1,800-page National Defense Authorization Act ( NDAA ) with an 85-14 vote on Wednesday, sending it to President Biden for his signature. The bill, which authorizes defense spending for the new fiscal year starting October 1st, includes a roughly 1% increase over last year's budget.
While NDAAs typically enjoy bipartisan support, Republicans successfully included a provision prohibiting the military's healthcare service, Tricare, from covering gender transition care for children under 18 of service members. This move drew criticism from 21 Senate Democrats, led by Sen. Tammy Baldwin, who argued it could impact 6,000 to 7,000 children.
