The government shutdown is entering its 20th day with no sign of ending soon.
The Capitol is seen under gray skies on the thirteenth day of the government shutdown, in Washington, Monday, Oct. 13, 2025. The shutdown is stretching into week 4 as the Senate prepares to vote for the 11th time on the stopgap bill to reopen the federal government.
“Democrats just voted against the bill that would actually pay the troops. You have to ask the question, ‘Why?’ Mr. President,” Thune said after the vote. Thune is looking to force Democrats to vote on this bill again on Monday, after they previously blocked the vote 50 to 44. The bill would need 60 votes to advance. “I mean, who really cares, right, if the troops are paid as long as the Democrats are able to get what they want?” he said The bill previously held strong bipartisan support when it was passed out of the Appropriations Committee in July. The shutdown is now the third longest in U.S. history. The longest shutdown was during President Donald Trump’s first term, which lasted 35 days between 2018 and 2019. Democrats have said that they are willing to vote to reopen the government if Republicans are willing to start to discussing healthcare subsides now.
