Han Chong is probably tired of hearing editors describe Self-Portrait as a “dress label,” particularly one for “wedding guest dresses.” His knits and outerwear are distinctive, too, but his graphic lace frocks remain a popular calling card. When weddings and parties were canceled in the wake of COVID-19, Self-Portrait fans had a reason to try out Chong’s more casual, comfortable items, and he’s making them a bigger priority for spring.
Some of the more compelling examples included a clementine ribbed-knit dress with asymmetrical snaps down the hip; close them up for a day on the couch with your laptop, then undo them into a slit for al fresco drinks. A ribbed minidress with a polo neck looked similarly versatile, something you’d just as easily wear with sneakers or stacked-heel boots. As for his signature party dresses, Chong’s familiar ruffled maxis and eyelet minis came in cotton rather than silk.
