The Best Looks from the 2019 Cannes Film Festival

Selena Gomez has never been one to shy away from discussions surrounding mental health—and recently, she opened up for a candid conversation on her own experience with bipolar disorder.Sitting down with her husband, Benny Blanco, on an episode of his Friends Keep Secrets podcast, the Wondermind co-founder spoke about her diagnosis, managing episodes of mania, and how she has gotten to where she is today.

“I knew something was wrong, but I think I was misdiagnosed,” she told Blanco when he asked if she knew what she was dealing with before she was formally diagnosed. “I’m so grateful I went to four different rehabs because it all helped me understand it.”Gomez, who first shared her diagnosis with the public back in 2020, revealed that she tried “multiple therapists” before finally figuring things out. “It’s actually really hard when we’re talking about these things, and for me to go, ‘Go get a therapist.’ All of it is so... complicated.”The “Lose You To Love Me” singer noted that she has been able to live more “freely” since the diagnosis. “I’m equally proud to say that I do have moments of mania,” she said. “I’m not ashamed at all, because I can catch them a bit quicker.”Jumping in, Blanco reminded listeners of the importance of knowing what your partner needs during a challenging moment. “She’ll start to realize she’s having it after it’s happening, and sometimes she doesn’t even remember when it’s happening,” he added. “It’s such a delicate thing because… you’re not supposed to, technically, talk to the person about it while they’re deep in it.”“It is helpful to have a partner who will understand...” Gomez replied. “And meet you where you are.”
