Housing costs, local tax rates and the percentage of people age 65 and older were some of the factors that made certain Texas cities stand out as retirement destinations — but San Antonio didn't crack the top 10. The Alamo City came in 12th out of 25 cities with a population of 100,000 or greater in a ranking of best cities in Texas for retirement, as compiled by retirement research journal Retirement Living .

Study: Loyalty paid off for Texans who stayed in the same job last year Retirement Living used data from the 2023 American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates, real estate company Redfin and the Texas Comptroller. It scored cities for its Feb. 6 list on several factors, including the percentage of residents age 65 and older, median home sale price, median monthly rent, poverty rate and sales tax rate.
