Published: Jan. 26, 2026, 4:03 p.m.A section of Route 1 in Edison has been closed for hours after a water main break. Crews have been on the scene working to repair the water main since about 10 a.m., Edison Mayor Sam Joshi.
In the post, a video shared by the mayor shows water bursting out from a pipe near the highway median and pouring onto both sides of the road. The water main break occurred near the highway’s intersection with Travers Avenue, just south of the Route 514 exit. The northbound side of the highway into Edison is currently closed via the Morris Goodkind Bridge, police said. Traffic is being diverted in New Brunswick onto Route 18. In the most recent update at 3 p.m., the New Jersey DOT said Route 1 northbound is currently closed and detoured at Route 18 while southbound is closed and detoured at Plainfield Avenue. The DOT said drivers should expect heavy delays during the evening commute and the Tuesday morning commute and urged motorists to consider alternate routes. Edison Water Utility are expected to complete repairs on be completed on Tuesday, the DOT said in a statement.
