A misunderstanding led Chicago Public Schools to initially believe ICE agents visited a South Side elementary school. It was later confirmed that U.S. Secret Service agents were investigating a threat linked to the TikTok ban.

After Chicago Public Schools (CPS) initially stated that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents visited a South Side elementary school Friday morning, it was later confirmed that this information was inaccurate. Instead, U.S. Secret Service agents were investigating a threat linked to the TikTok ban. The Secret Service responded to a threat originating from a home near John H. Hamline Elementary School in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

The threat targeted an individual under Secret Service protection, though specific details have not been disclosed. \As no one was present at the home, agents proceeded to visit the elementary school around 11:15 a.m. According to CPS, two agents presented identification cards that included the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). CPS noted that the agency overseeing ICE also falls under DHS, leading to the initial confusion. 'School officials responded to the agents with the understanding that they were from ICE, amidst rumors and reports that the agency was in the community,' CPS stated in a release Friday evening. \Following established protocol, school personnel contacted the district’s Law Department and Office of Safety and Security while keeping the agents outside the school premises. The agents were not permitted inside the school and left their business cards with school staff. They did not engage in any conversations with students or staff, and teaching continued uninterrupted. \Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the incident with a statement at 7:45 p.m. Friday, emphasizing that 'Chicago will always be a welcoming city, we will always uphold the Welcoming City Ordinance, and we will always protect our students and every resident of our city.' He clarified that Secret Service agents, not ICE agents, were present at John H. Hamline Elementary School. \While acknowledging community anxieties regarding heightened immigration enforcement, Johnson urged residents not to spread unverified information that could incite fear. He encouraged everyone to visit www.chicago.gov for guidance provided to city agencies and the 'Know Your Rights and Resources' information released by his administration. \FOX 32 Chicago reached out to ICE when the incident was first reported, and the agency confirmed that their agents were not involved. A spokesperson stated, 'This was not a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement encounter' and directed inquiries to local law enforcement. The Chicago Police Department reported receiving no calls for service at the location. \CPS has been actively communicating with labor partners and community organizations that have been instrumental in informing and supporting school communities. The district has also provided principals and staff with comprehensive guidance on students’ rights and protections regarding ICE visits. \Under the City of Chicago's Welcoming City Ordinance, ICE agents are prohibited from accessing CPS facilities without proper credentials, a valid purpose, and a criminal judicial warrant signed by a federal judge, according to CPS officials. A judicial warrant is also required for ICE to search school property or seize records. \For more detailed information on CPS' guidance and resources, please follow this link
