Kimberly Cheatle told members of Congress Monday she has occasionally used 'encrypted apps' on a personal device.
U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle testifies before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a campaign event in Pennsylvania, at the Capitol in Washington, Monday, July 22, 2024.
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle admitted Monday she has occasionally used "encrypted apps" to communicate with colleagues using a personal device.regarding the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., asked Cheatle whether she has ever used "encrypted apps" on her personal device, prompting the director to say she does so "on occasion." "So, you use some form of an encrypted app to communicate with -- people within the federal government? With local law enforcement?" Rep. Burlison pressed. The Secret Service director noted such occasions have come when the agency is working internationally and some agents "don't have the same texting capability." She added the Secret Service has only recently been able to install such apps on their government-issued devices. That might be the most shocking thing that I've heard today. I didn't expect for you to say that," Rep. Burlison said.Cheatle later told Rep. Burlison he didn't ask her whether her communications using the apps are work-related, asserting she does not discuss government matters with colleagues using personal devices. She added she does not use any "encrypted apps" on her work devices. Earlier in the hearing, Cheatle said the Secret Service "failed" to protect Trump at his Butler, Pa. rally, calling it "the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades." Both Republican and Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee expressed frustration with Cheatle Monday. Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., called for the resignation of the Secret Service director, saying Cheatle has "lost the confidence of Congress." The director has previously faced other calls to step down, including from House Speaker Mike Johnson.
