The U.S. Attorney's Office announced on January 30 that Aliyah Robyn Stalder, a 24-year-old woman from Seattle , has been sentenced for an incident that occurred onboard a flight to Phoenix . Stalder pleaded guilty in November 2024 to Assault by Striking, Beating, or Wounding on an Aircraft. According to the statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office, a judge sentenced Stalder to three years of probation.
During this probationary period, Stalder will face several restrictions, including being prohibited from traveling on commercial aircraft without prior authorization. She is also required to pay a $5,000 penalty imposed by Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials, in addition to over $8,000 in restitution. The incident involving Stalder took place on a commercial flight from Seattle to Phoenix on February 9, 2023. While the statement did not disclose the specific flight number or the airline operating the flight, it detailed that during the journey, Stalder attempted to open multiple cabin doors and had to be restrained by both flight crew members and fellow passengers.During the struggle to restrain Stalder, she assaulted one of the flight attendants. The FAA website reports a significant increase in unruly passenger incidents in 2021, but a subsequent decline. At its peak in March 2021, the FAA received 720 reports of such incidents. For the entire year of 2021, there were 5,973 reported incidents. In 2023, the number dropped to 2,076 reported incidents, and for 2024, it stood at 2,102
