Federal and state leaders are pressing the U.S. State Department for answers in the death of Ayşenur Eygi, a West Seattle woman killed by an Israeli soldier during a West Bank protest. Eygi's family and lawmakers allege inconsistencies in the IDF's investigation, calling for a US-led probe.
Federal and state leaders are renewing their calls for answers from the U.S. State Department concerning the death of Ayşenur Eygi , a West Seattle woman killed by an Israel i soldier during a West Bank protest last September. Rep. Pramila Jayapal first urged the State Department to pressure the Israel i Defense Force's ( IDF ) investigation into Eygi's death in October. In December, she joined forces with Senator Patty Murray, demanding a U.S.
-led investigation as the IDF probe appeared to contradict eyewitness accounts. Months later, with little apparent progress, Jayapal and Murray are joined by Senators Bernie Sanders, Peter Welch, Chris Van Hollen, Jeff Merkley, and Representatives Jim McGovern, Sara Jacobs, and Joaquin Castro in their pursuit of answers from the State Department. Eygi, 26, was a member of the International Solidarity Movement, which was protesting against illegal Israeli settlement construction in the Palestinian West Bank. During a demonstration on September 6th near Nablus, eyewitnesses claim Eygi moved away from the main group of protesters to an olive tree shortly before being shot in the head by an IDF sniper. A 17-year-old boy was also injured in the incident. Eygi's remains were returned to her family's hometown of Didim in Turkey for burial. The IDF's preliminary investigation concluded the shooting was accidental, stating that Eygi was likely hit indirectly by fire intended for a 'key instigator' of the alleged riot. The IDF asserts that protesters, including Eygi, had become violent towards Israeli settlers and soldiers, throwing rocks. However, critics question the IDF's narrative, citing inconsistencies with eyewitness accounts and a lack of transparency. The U.S. has faced criticism for its perceived lack of urgency in addressing Eygi's killing, especially in comparison to its swift condemnation of the death of Israeli-American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin just days prior. Lawmakers are demanding answers to seven key questions, including the identity of the 'key instigator,' the specific reason for Eygi's shooting, and whether the IDF investigation was impartial and thorough
