Seattle City Councilmember Tammy J. Morales along with other community leaders proposed a “bolder” transportation levy that would increase the total size to $1.
In a statement, Morales said the new proposal would be focused on improving traffic safety . Morales said the emphasis on safety comes after six people were killed on Seattle ’s roads in a one-week span in May.
Traffic deaths in Seattle are at a record high, the statement said. It also said that in 2022 there were 256 serious injuries and fatal collisions. AMorales said that the current transportation levy proposal is “not bold enough.” This new proposal would invest $90 million more to create safer streets, sidewalks, and bike lanes. It would also invest $45 million more to strengthen maintenance and modernization and invest $15 million more to expand Seattle’s tree canopy.
