Seattle police have stepped up patrols in the Chinatown-International District to combat rising crime and improve safety for residents and businesses. The increased presence includes SWAT officers and regular patrol units, focusing on the intersection of 12th Avenue and Jackson Street.
SWAT officers and patrols are actively monitoring the intersection of 12th Avenue and Jackson Street in Seattle's Chinatown-International District to address ongoing safety concerns . Detective Brian Pritchard said, 'There’s been a lot of activity over here as far as drug activity selling of products, and officers are out here to if need be make arrests.
' The area has been plagued by incidents, including a mass stabbing late last year and an unprovoked attack where a woman stabbed a 22-year-old man in the lower back. The Metro bus service also stopped on 12th and Jackson due to safety concerns for bus drivers and riders after a man was fatally stabbed while working his shift as a King County Metro bus driver.Binko Chiong-Bisbee, owner of KOBO Seattle, expressed the impact crime has had on local businesses, saying, 'Many of us are small business owners, and many of us this year have noticed in 2024 that our business has dropped off because of negative perception.' Seattle police have implemented a strategy involving SWAT and patrol officers to support the Downtown Activation Team, a city initiative launched in November. The officers are securing a three-block radius to facilitate cleanup efforts by other city agencies. Seattle police acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating that while the patrols are a step towards revitalizing the area, significant work remains to be done
