The Seahawks’ backup quarterback made a bleak situation fully unrecoverable after replacing an injured Geno Smith.
For all intents and purposes, despite having one handoff snap against the Atlanta Falcons, backup quarterback Sam Howell made his Seattle Seahawks debut on Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers. It did not go well. Geno Smith’s knee injury forced Howell into his first meaningful action of the season, no doubt an unenviable task behind a bad offensive line and facing a 20-3 deficit.
Howell did lead Seattle’s only touchdown drive, completing three passes for 21 yards before Zach Charbonnet’s 24-yard score. That’s literally the only drive out of seven prior to garbage time in which he managed any first downs. Here’s what Howell had to say after his emergency performance. “Yeah, I think at the end of the day I’ve got to be better,” Howell said . “I think my job is to be ready to go in there and play well and help this team win, and I didn’t do that today.
