Seattle Seahawks general manager and president of football operations John Schneider has been named the NFL’s Executive of the Year by the Professional Football Writers of America, an honor recognizing his role in assembling a team that finished the regular season 14-3 and earned a spot in this weekend’s NFC Championship Game. Schneider, who helped build the Seahawks into Super Bowl champions early in his tenure, is receiving the award for the first time. More than a decade after those championship seasons, he has again overseen the construction of one of the league’s top teams, one that followed up its regular-season success with a dominant divisional-round victory. The PFWA award reflects work done over the past year, though the Seahawks’ current position is the result of several seasons of roster decisions and organizational direction. Schneider’s recent résumé includes multiple free-agent signings, a fourth consecutive draft that added contributors to the roster, a trade for returner and receiver Rashid Shaheed, and several significant personnel moves designed to position the team for both present and future success. Head coach Mike Macdonald, hired by Schneider, credited the general manager’s leadership and approach within the organization.
