Seattle Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolen was benched for the opening drive of their Week 5 game against the Minnesota Vikings due to a 'team rules' violation. Coach Mike Macdonald stated it was a team decision and that Woolen played well after re-entering the game.

After a rough game against the Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Riq Woolen was conspicuously absent from the opening drive of the team’s 27-24 home loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Tre Brown, Josh Jobe, and Devon Witherspoon were the corners on the field for what was an eventual touchdown for the Vikings. Woolen assumed his usual snaps following that benching.

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald told reporters after the game that it was a “team rules” issue that led to Woolen not starting. Macdonald later said he thought Woolen played a good game. Woolen was involved on the winning touchdown to Justin Jefferson. It was a Cover 2 look and Julian Love didn’t get over the top in time to knock the ball away from one of the best receivers in the sport. It’s still not great that this is the second year in a row (with two different coaches, so this is not a scheme issue to me) that Woolen has been benched in some capacity deep into the season for some sort of problem either on the field or off of it. Woolen leads the Seahawks in passes defensed but he’s also been prone to lapses in coverage and other critical mistakes that have hurt the team
