SDSU's search for a replacement for Elijah Saunders continues after Mawot Mag, who visited SDSU, commits to Cougars
Mawot Mag, a 6-foot-7 grad transfer from Rutgers, committed to BYU on Sunday afternoon following a protracted recruitment that included what appeared to be a positive campus visit to San Diego State three weeks ago. It means SDSU's search for a veteran replacement for Elijah Saunders continues, after the 6-8 junior projected as a starting forward next season unexpectedly entered the portal two days before the deadline and transferred to Virginia.
When healthy, Mag was considered one of the top defenders in the Big Ten. He tore the ACL in his right knee late in 2022-23 and missed the first month of 2023-24 while recuperating. A calf strain kept him out of the final five games last season. One red flag was questions about the severity of the calf injury. NJ.com wrote that “with each game Mag missed … speculation grew that he was conserving his body to eventually enter the transfer portal.
