Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña shooting a bow and arrow while flying in Avatar: Fire and Ash
This week on the roundup, the ScreenRant Movie Review Team has got everything from revisited Christmas classics to recently shortlisted Oscar contenders to a cuckoo bananas literary adaptation. Below you'll find excerpts from each review, the film's trailer, and a link to read the whole piece.
We've got reviews for James Cameron's third Avatar entry, multi-Oscar winner Laura Poitras' new documentary on investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, reappraisals of The Grinch, Heat and Sense & Sensibility and more, PLUS some re-published reviews of Marty Supreme, Is This Thing On? and The Voice of Hind Rajab. Be sure to follow us as we round out this year, and be on the lookout for our list of the Top 10 Films of 2025. Avatar: Fire & Ash "Again, however, Cameron conceives sequences with such imagination and confidence that you can’t help but be gobsmacked as they unfold, even when they don’t push the story into interesting enough directions afterward."Cover-Up "Watching this Netflix film in the wake of its imminent buyout of Warner Bros., it becomes clearer than ever before: Hersh was a rare breed in his younger days, and he certainly is now. And we need more like him."The Housemaid "Yet, The Housemaid's transgressions are of very little concern here. Breakneck pacing and a tightly plotted story make up for any sort of flaws that could be found in the film. It's best not to think of those anyway while watching The Housemaid precisely because its flaws are what make it so fun."The Plague "Indeed, Breckon's work behind the camera provides as much, if not more, palpable prepubescent tension. Much of the film feels like if Ari Aster directed Diary of a Wimpy Kid. That's not necessarily an endorsement."25th Anniversary of How The Grinch Stole Christmas "25 years later, some may still not like Ron Howard's noisy, oversized take on Seuss' source material. But like a lovable green oaf once said, 'one man's toxic sludge is another man's potpourri... I think it's a soup?' For better or worse, How The Grinch Stole Christmas has become a multi-generational touchstone."30th Anniversary of Sense & Sensibility "Thompson’s script imbued its characters with a sense of realism that made them still feel highly relatable. Exploring universal themes of reason, emotion, and financial woes, it was easy to connect with the plight of the Dashwood sisters."30th Anniversary of Heat "They say that everything meaningful in nature comes in pairs. That might be up for some debate universally, but in Heat, it’s an unassailable truth. At the center of this near-three-hour crime epic are Neil McCauley and Vincent Hanna, both locked in perfect opposition."The President's Cake "In spite of some of the darker set pieces with heavy implications - like a butcher who seems friendly, at first, but turns out to be a pedophile - The President's Cake has an almost comic touch. That's admirable, if for no other reason than Hadi does work hard to steer away from the pitfalls of award-baiting neoliberal claptrap that this very easily could have become."The Voice of Hind Rajab "Like Agnieszka Holland's Green Border, which was made in the midst of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, The Voice of Hind Rajab benefits from its immediacy. The film is a constant anxiety attack, and it is the trick of the cinema that, despite knowing the tragic end to the story ahead of time, we sit in anguish and in desperate, vain hope that Rajab's life might be saved."Is This Thing On? "The result is a story that is as funny as it is heartfelt. Led by a fantastic cast and writing that takes its time while feeling grounded, the film sidesteps what might have been an easy inclination towards going over the top."10th Anniversary of Star Wars: The Force Awakens "In spite of that, The Force Awakens, as a standalone, largely works. It's a fun, high-energy, George Lucas-style production that introduces a host of dynamic new characters and brings some of the best parts of Star Wars back to the big screen."Marty Supreme "In a career that seems to accumulate only great performances, Timothée Chalamet delivers one of his greatest yet by leveraging his scrappy, boyish charms to make audiences love a character who is frequently anything but lovable."The SpongeBob Movie: The Search for SquarePants "The Search for SquarePants is just a raucously good time punctuated by a bevy of butt jokes. In a film that gets mileage simply out of the escalating desperation with which SpongeBob blinks his eye, how complicated does its messaging need to be? We all need a really good laugh, and Drymon and company deliver."
