James Cameron at the European premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash
James Cameron fires back at those who criticize him for focusing only on the Avatar franchise for the past few decades. The debate regarding where Cameron has been spending his time as a filmmaker has been raging for years, with some internet commenters arguing that the celebrated filmmaker should direct other projects outside the world of Pandora.
In a recent interview with THR, Cameron makes clear that he's happy with his filmmaking choices over the past 30 years. “I’m feeling fulfilled as an artist," the director says,"And when become filmmakers, they can make those types of decisions for themselves — or just stay the f**k out of it." Cameron continues: “It’s my decision, not yours. It’s like saying, ‘Gee, I wish she wasn’t married to the same guy for so long.’ It’s none of your business.” While Cameron is content with his decades spent on the Avatar movies, he does reveal that he's excited to branch out into other projects. That doesn't mean he's going to leave Pandora behind, but the filmmaker says he's ready to embrace a new way of directing new installments should a fourth and fifth film get the green light. Check out his comment below: “I’ve got other stories to tell, and I’ve got other stories to tell within Avatar. What won’t happen is, I won’t go down the rabbit hole of exclusively making only Avatar for multiple years. I’m going to figure out another way that involves more collaboration. I’m not saying I’m going to step away as a director, but I’m going to pull back from being as hands-on with every tiny aspect of the process.” For Cameron, stepping back a little as director on future Avatar installments would involve giving more authority and creative power to his second units. These second units have gradually taken on a bigger role with each new movie, including during the production of the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash. One thing Cameron makes clear, though, is that his decision to step back somewhat from Avatar isn't about a desire to return to more traditional and practical filmmaking methods. On the contrary, the CGI-heavy production is one he relishes. As he explains: “You’re not waiting 20 minutes for the perfect sunset. They say, ‘practical is always better.’ Practical is better in one way: It might be cheaper. But I could do the best car chase you ever saw and never put a real car on the road and you wouldn’t know.” Still, however, Cameron picks a very practical shot as his favorite from his filmography. According to the director, the sunset kiss scene from Titanic stands above everything else for him, even though it's very slightly out of focus. As hopes began to fade that they would get the shot in question, Cameron recalls, the sky opened up, revealing a perfect sunset and only minutes of light. Kate Winslet took the initiative and ran to the bow of the ship, yelling for cameras to roll. Cameron's immediate future as a director remains unclear. Avatar 4 and 5 have been written – and some parts of 4 have already been shot – but Cameron has recently stressed Fire and Ash as the end of a trilogy. Whether a fourth movie happens, he's explained, depends on how successful the third one is. Beyond that, he's working away on the script for Terminator 7, and he's also attached to adapt of Ghosts of Hiroshima, a non-fiction World War II novel by Charles Pellegrino. He's also attached to co-write the script for The Devils, Joe Abercrombie's epic fantasy novel. While many questions remain about Cameron's upcoming projects and what will take precedence, it's clear that spending so many years in the world of Avatar is not something the filmmaker has any regrets about. Audiences can experience the next return to Pandora on December 19 with the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash.
