More than 2,000 complaints about sewage in Scottish rivers, lochs and beaches were made to watchdogs between 2019 and 2023
More than 2,000 complaints about sewage in Scotland’s rivers, lochs and beaches were made to the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency between 2019 and 2023.
River Almond Action Group volunteers found entire trees covered in wet wipes and oother toilet waste during one visit in July 2021, and have continued to find such debris in the years since. A Scottish Water spokesperson said it had been “working to try and reduce the amount of sewage related debris” flowing into the River Almond. The spokesman added: “We also have 10 CSOs which have been prioritised for investment in the Almond catchment to reduce the amount of litter entering the river from the sewer.”
In January, after an investigation, the ESS watchdog found that guidance used by Sepa staff to decide whether sewage releases break pollution rules was “unclear” and “unhelpful”. Sepa has now changed its guidelines. In the first nine months of 2019, there were 1,048 complaints to Sepa about sewage in Scotland’s rivers, according to data first obtained by the Scottish Liberal Democrats following a Freedom of Information request.
The senior Sepa figure said the CPOs were “an integral part of Scotland’s sewerage system, designed to discharge at times of high rainfall to prevent sewage backing-up and flooding houses”.
