A cooler and windy day is ahead in Chicago with the first snow of the season approaching.
CHICAGO — The Chicago area's first snow of the season begins Wednesday night as scattered light rain showers return to the area, then transition to snow flurries after dark. While it will be cold and windy with occasional flurries overnight, this is not the main round of snow heading our way.A few suburbs will wake up to a dusting of snow on the grass on Thursday, but heavier snow moves into the area from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
With temperatures near or just below freezing during the heaviest periods of snow, 1-2 inches of wet snow accumulation is now expected throughout Chicago and across much of the area. A band of heavier snow totals up to 3' is possible in parts of northwest Indiana, while snow totals will be slightly lower in far western suburbs.While much of the accumulation will be on grassy and elevated surfaces, slush is possible on the roads Thursday morning through early afternoon.
