Ohioans can report scam attempts to the Federal Trade Commission by visiting reportfraud.ftc.gov.
The text message s say the recipient has an outstanding traffic ticket and they must pay immediately to avoid having their license suspended. “We’ve heard they may pay like a penny per text, these scammers,” Ohio BMV Registrar Charlie Norman said.
“So if you send out a thousand texts that’s $10,000 bucks that’s nothing.” “If you just get a fraction of a percent of a million people to respond and give you $100, make a pretty penny on this.”“The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles has received reports of a possible texting scam being perpetrated on Ohioans today from scammers claiming to be from Ohio BMV. Ohio residents have reported receiving text messages from scammers claiming to be from BMV and informing the recipients that they have an outstanding traffic ticket. The text then instructs the recipient to pay immediately to avoid a license suspension. This particular scam is a phishing attempt that is being reported by drivers nationwide and is designed to trick residents into giving up personal or financial information. “If you receive this text, do not fall for this scam,” said Ohio BMV Registrar Charlie Norman. “Do not click any links and delete the text. Ohio BMV will never send you a text demanding payment or requesting your personal information.”“It’ll just have the state name switched at the top,” Norman said. “You will know if you have a traffic violation or a ticket because you will have either received that in person, or you’ll have received something in the mail,” Director of Marketing with the BBB Katie Hills said. “A lot of people will see this and immediately think ‘okay I need to act right away’, take a beat, take a breath and think ‘okay, was I even in a circumstance where I might have been given a ticket or received any type of notice?”65-year-old man found dead in downtown Cleveland parking garage
