That’s the refrain running through Erik de Waal’s “Clueless in ZA,” a storytelling performance about growing up at the end of Apartheid in South Africa.
It’s a history lesson, a coming-of-age story, a road trip travelogue and a call to reckoning all rolled into one, and de Wall is a practised hand at weaving deftly between them. de Wall has a captivating stage presence, and conveys a deep appreciation for the humanity — and the irony — all around him. So many of the stories in the show hinge on his witness of cruelty for cruelty’s sake, and the moments where that was punctuated by kindness without reason.
His descriptions are so apt and vivid, funny and bracing in turns, that every story comes to life as he tells it; the hour long show is completely immersive. There was an error, please provide a valid email address.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
