and Ayla Tarasoff, who spoke of being routinely harassed and placed in dangerous situations by people in vehicles when they ride bicycles in the city.Block further moved to have $30,000 taken from a reserve fund to pay for the proposed safety audit and to have council receive an update on implementation of the city’s active transportation plan, including the status of any connections planned in the area bounded by College Drive, Preston Avenue, 12th Street, and Clarence Avenue.
Through discussion and questions of city staff, council learned that using more third-party road safety audits is already part of the city’s long-term active transportation plan, which is due for an update as it has been in place for about a decade. Transportation director Jay Magus said the update of the active transportation plan will involve full rounds of public consultation. In the shorter term, he said he anticipates that city staff could have a third-party audit of the intersection completed before the end of 2023 and could put together the budget request and options for a wider program of safety audits in time for this year’s budget deliberations in November.
