Saskatoon baker and chocolatier Venessa Liang chats with the StarPhoenix about her recent experience on CTV's Cross Country Cake Off.

This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.I made it past the first round of qualifiers. And then at the regional final, I did not qualify for the finale. But I can tell you that in the finale, they do have a fun wild card spot that one of the eliminated bakers will be taking up. I can’t tell you if it’s going to be me or who it’s going to be.

So, I’m so proud of how it happened and I’m very cognizant of what TV shows are like — TV baking is not real baking. It’s not what we create at home and it’s definitely not a judgment of who we are and our experience and skills as bakers.Article contentBecause you can’t have a million hobbies — I’ve learned the hard way — while also working full time, I’ve kind of split my things up into seasons. I only do cakes mostly in the summer and then my chocolate season is in the winter.

But I’m really just trying to find balance in my life. The biggest lesson I’ve learned about this: to continue to love it and appreciate that creativity, I need to limit the amount that I do. I want this to continue to be something that I love.Article contentI’ve started judging culinary competitions locally, and it’s been quite a bit of fun. I don’t think I would compete again by myself. But I think in the future, I would love to judge a show.
