York, who joined the Sentinel staff in 2014, was known for her hard work, conscientiousness, and dedication to both her craft and the community she called home for 11 years. Born in western Massachusetts in 1981, York developed a love for writing at a young age.
Her younger sister, Tanya, recalled how York would always be engrossed in reading books rather than playing games. This passion for writing eventually led her to journalism, where she honed her skills at her high school newspaper, the West Springfield High School paper, and later at the University of New Hampshire, graduating with a degree in journalism in 2003. York's career took her across the state of California, reporting for newspapers in Benicia, Vallejo, and finally, Santa Cruz. While at the Times-Herald, she covered local politics and became known for her tenacity and ability to get the story right. She was also praised for her fairness and dedication to getting both sides of the story. At the Sentinel, York's primary beats were crime, courts, and homelessness, but she also covered a wide range of other topics, including city politics, schools, and the San Lorenzo Valley Water District. She was known for her compassionate approach to covering sensitive issues and her ability to connect with people on a human level.
