Senator Ted Cruz's friendly wager with Vice President-elect J.D. Vance over the Texas-Ohio State football game has ignited a debate among Texas fans about the so-called 'Cruz Curse', where teams supposedly lose when he's present. While Cruz has witnessed both Texas victories and defeats at sporting events, some fans believe his presence is detrimental to the Longhorns' performance.
It’s not at all uncommon for politicians from one state to place a friendly wager with a cohort from another state when their respective sports teams meet on the field. Usually, the bet barely raises an eyebrow, but Texas fans have taken notice of Sen.
Ted Cruz’s deal with Vice President-elect J.D. Vance over Friday night’s Texas-Ohio State matchup in the Cotton Bowl of the College Football Playoff. “Hey @JDVance — care for a wager on the UT-Ohio State game? Loser brings beer & food from his home state & delivers it wearing the winning jersey? #HookEm,” Cruz posted on Twitter on Tuesday. Vance, who graduated from Ohio State, quickly accepted the deal, asking his followers, “Which Texas ice cream should I have Ted bring when the Buckeyes win?” Not all Longhorn fans are thrilled with the friendly banter, because there are some that believe in what has become known as the Cruz Curse, in which the team he supports loses whenever he’s in attendance. Of course, as with anything that bounces around the internet, it’s not entirely based on fact. Cruz has been at plenty of losses for the home team, including the Longhorns' defeat at the hands of Washington in last year’s CFP semifinal, but he also was at Minute Maid Park for one of the Astros' biggest home wins in franchise history: Game 6 of the 2022 World Series. He also was at Game 4 of that season’s American League Championship Series at Yankee Stadium when the Astros finished off the sweep of the Yankees. Still, that didn’t stop Texas fans from fanning the flames of the supposed curse. “JD, this man has zero authority to wager on behalf of the Texas Longhorns and should be blocked and reported,” wrote Evil MoPac, an Austin-based parody account on Twitter with nearly 60,000 followers. Kyle Umlang, author of “101 Aggie Facts: Things Every Longhorns Should Know,” wrote, “I will bring you food if you never speak of Texas football again.” Texas is a 5.5-point underdog to Ohio State, but Cruz, who attended the Texas-Texas A&M game and expressed his neutrality by wearing a Switzerland shirt, sees it going the other way, predicting, “Texas by 5.”
