Scooters will be available in San Marcos around the clock, and in a limited area east of I-35 for the first time, under a new city pilot program.
San Marcos will allow electric scooter rentals after midnight and permit them to be used in an area east of Interstate 35, citing feedback from riders, especially Texas State students, who’ve asked for expanded scooter service in the city. The expansion will be a six-month pilot program, and will be limited to a small area east of the highway near Aquarena Springs Drive between Uhland Drive and Davis Lane , which includes several apartment complexes.
Bird, one of two electric scooter operators in San Antonio, files for bankruptcy The city and Texas State University entered a contract with Spin Scooters in 2021 to operate in a limited area west of I-35, including the university campus. In March, the company proposed expanding that area east of the highway. Spin Scooters also requested to extend operating hours, which are currently restricted to 5 a.m. to midnight.
As Texas State reaches for the stars, it looks to stay affordable Spin Scooters operates 24-hour service in many other “town and gown” cities with large universities, Campbell told the council, including Baton Rouge, Louisiana, home to Louisiana State University, and Fayetteville, Arkansas, where the University of Arkansas is located. Spin Scooter’s parent company, Bird, and another scooter company, Lime, both operate around the clock in Austin, including the University of Texas campus, he said.
