One bad inning spoils things for Cal State San Marcos in 10-3 defeat to Cal Poly Pomona; Cougars face San Francisco State Thursday night in elimination game
Cal State San Marcos spent the past three months making this a special season that brought the Cougars to the doorstep of a conference title. Grinding away day after day, San Marcos posted its first winning season in nearly a decade, finished mere percentage points behind champion Cal State Monterey Bay in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings and earned the No. 2 seed to this week's CCAA Tournament.
The Cougars had one bad inning — a six-run third where 11 batters stepped to the plate — that spelled disaster Thursday in a 10-3 loss to tournament host Cal Poly Pomona. San Marcos' Conner Gleissner relieved starter Roman Connolly to get the last out in the third inning. Cal Poly Pomona built its lead to 8-0 before San Marcos second baseman Luke Reece led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run. Both teams scored twice in the eighth, preventing the Cougars from getting any closer.
