With a third of the votes yet to be tallied, County Supervisor Cindy Chavez may now have a path to victory over frontrunner Matt Mahan.

With two-thirds of the ballots counted, San Jose’s mayoral race continued to tighten Saturday as Cindy Chavez gained on Matt Mahan, whittling his lead to fewer than 4,000 votes.

Overall, Mahan has 51.07% and Chavez 48.93% of the 186,895 votes counted so far, with 67% of the estimated total ballots countywide processed. Ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 8 to be valid, and will be counted as long as they arrive by Nov. 15. Santa Clara County election staff will be working 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through the weekend and into next week processing ballots, and updates will be posted online by 5 p.m. each day. At this point, the remaining ballots are almost entirely late mail votes. Well over 90 percent of the ballots cast in Santa Clara County in this election were mail ballots.

So it appears Chavez’ late-breaking momentum does not stem from a concentration of votes from any particular area of the city. Instead, it appears she is simply doing better than Mahan in the later votes, making it possible the trend will continue. She said San Jose’s police force remains 200 officers short of the department’s staffing when she left City Hall after 2006. She pointed to her efforts to get a $950 million bond for affordable housing passed, which helped house 20,000 people over the last five years.
