Conductor Rafael Payare and filmmaker Alberto Arvelo reimagine a Venezuelan story with universal appeal
It’s not too often you hear the words rap or hip-hop when describing an operatic orchestral piece. It’s even more rare that a film is created specifically for that piece of music and shown behind an orchestra. And it’s a first here for San Diego Symphony Music Director Rafael Payare to conduct Cantata Criolla, a classic work from his native Venezuela that’s steeped in the country’s folkloric traditions.
“The next singer takes the line from the first and develops it into another line — like how they do with rap. The music is great. The rhythm isRafael Payare conducts the San Diego Symphony at the Rady Shell at Jacob Park in 2021. “Both Rafa and Gustavo are amazing conductors, and both are emotionally connected to the cantata,” Arvelo said, speaking from his home in L.A. “Rafa wanted something different. He was intrigued by the confrontation between good and evil, and how the music reflected that.In April, Payare led the Montreal Symphony Orchestra’s indoor Cantata Criolla performance. Some adjustments will be made for the open-air concert at the Shell.
Arvelo’s grandfather, Alberto Arvelo Torrealba, wrote the poem “Florentino and the Devil” in 1940, with variations published in the 1950s. Inspired by the beloved legend, Torrealba used indigenous phrases and folkloric traditions throughout.“Of course, I have this intimate connection with this poem,” Arvelo said. “Not only because my grandfather wrote it, but also as a Venezuelan. It represents our culture and connection with the landscape and nature.
Gerard McBurney, the symphony’s creative consultant, collaborated with visual artist Amelia Kosminsky to fill the screen with images during the two French works.
