The San Diego County Board of Supervisors has chosen to postpone the selection of a new chair, vice chair, and pro tem until after the April 22nd election to fill the District 1 supervisor seat. The delay follows the resignation of former Chair Nora Vargas and the announcement of a special election.

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 on Tuesday to postpone the selection of a new chair, vice chair, and pro tem until April 22, following the primary election to determine the successor for the District 1 supervisor seat. Vice Chair Terra Lawson-Remer will continue to serve as acting chair until then, while Joel Anderson will remain in the pro tem role.

The decision comes after the resignation of former Chair Nora Vargas, District 1 supervisor, who announced she wouldn't seek a second term despite a resounding victory in the November election. On January 14, supervisors unanimously agreed to hold a special election to fill Vargas's vacant District 1 seat. A primary election is scheduled for April 8. If no candidate secures a majority on April 8, a runoff election will take place on July 1. Estimates for the election's cost range from $2 million to $6.6 million, according to the county.Initially, Supervisor Jim Desmond proposed a motion to delay the leadership decision for 90 days, aligning with the special election timeline. However, the board ultimately opted for a shorter delay ending on April 22. This postponement follows an earlier attempt on January 7, where supervisors failed to choose a new leader. Lawson-Remer was nominated as chair by Supervisor Montgomery Steppe, and Steppe as vice chair. While both women voted in favor, Desmond voted against the nominations, and Anderson abstained. Desmond's subsequent self-nomination for chair also fell short, resulting in a tie vote. Desmond and Anderson supported the motion, while Lawson-Remer and Steppe opposed it.With Vargas's departure, the board's current composition stands at two Democrats (Lawson-Remer and Steppe) and two Republicans (Anderson and Desmond). Importantly, the Board of Supervisors functions as a nonpartisan governing body. Multiple prominent South County officials have either formally declared their candidacy for the District 1 seat or expressed interest. These individuals include Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre, San Diego City Councilwoman Vivian Moreno, Chula Vista Mayor John McCann, and Chula Vista City Councilwoman Carolina Chavez
