A San Diego police officer fatally shot a man in downtown San Diego Tuesday night during a reported assault. The incident occurred after officers responded to reports of gunfire at a nearby trolley platform. The investigation is ongoing, and the officer involved has not been identified.

A San Diego police officer fatally shot a man in downtown San Diego Tuesday evening, authorities announced. Police were responding to reports of an assault around 8:45 p.m. on Broadway near Kettner Boulevard when they heard gunfire at a nearby trolley platform and investigated. Officers encountered a man in his early 20s on Kettner near West B Street, and the shooting occurred during this interaction, according to Sheriff's homicide Lt. Michael Krugh, whose team is investigating the case.

Investigators haven't provided details about the events leading up to the shooting, but confirmed a handgun was recovered from the man at the scene. Officers immediately provided medical assistance until paramedics arrived and transported the man to a hospital, where he died. No officers were injured. Lt. Krugh stated that there is security video footage of the incident at the trolley platform, as well as body-worn camera footage of the fatal shooting. The officer involved has not been publicly identified. Lt. Krugh shared that the officer has been with the department for just over two years and serves as a patrol officer at the Central Division. The Sheriff's homicide detectives are conducting the investigation under a countywide memorandum of understanding, ensuring that agencies do not investigate shootings and in-custody deaths involving their own officers. Lt. Krugh emphasized that detectives are actively gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be reviewed by the county District Attorney's Office to determine if any criminal charges will be filed against the officer. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact homicide investigators at 858-285-6330 or after hours at 858-868-3200. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477
