San Diego's first-ever United Against Hate Week comes a year after the city of San Diego saw a 77-percent spike in hate crimes over the previous year
Officials and community leaders in San Diego County are hosting the region’s first United Against Hate week beginning on Monday, with several virtual and in-person events scheduled through Saturday.
San Diego leaders said they are joining the growing campaign, which began in 2017 in the Bay Area with the first ever, to “empower local residents and communities to stand against racism and alter the course of growing intolerance.” The local campaign is spearheaded by the San Diego Regional Anti-Hate Crime Coalition and the U.S. Attorney’s Office., jumping from 26 in 2020 to 46 in 2021 — an increase of about 77 percent, according to San Diego police data. More than half of those were racially motivated, with anti-Black bias accounting for 10 cases. Anti-Asian and anti-Hispanic bias accounted for four cases each.at multiple times in both English and Spanish.
