Firefighters in San Bernardino, California, are being hailed as heroes after rescuing a 23-year-old woman from a house fire that destroyed her family's home. Elizabeth Romero's daughter, who is bed-bound, was trapped inside when the fire ignited on Monday. Firefighters bravely battled thick smoke and flames to locate the young woman and ultimately carried her to safety through a bedroom window.
A San Bernardino mother is expressing immense gratitude to firefighters who heroically rescued her daughter from a devastating house fire. The fire engulfed Elizabeth Romero's home on Monday, causing significant destruction. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they discovered Romero's 23-year-old bed-bound daughter still trapped inside. 'As we pulled up, a family member said there was a victim trapped inside. We started to push down the hallway,' said Capt. Nic Turner.
'We couldn't see anything. We could see it fireballing across the top of us, but the smoke was all the way to the floor. We were searching mainly by feel and using our thermal imaging cameras.' Firefighters bravely navigated the smoke-filled hallway, eventually locating the girl's closed bedroom door. While the fire was contained behind the door, smoke had permeated the room. 'She was calling out, she was screaming,' Turner recounted. 'But I found her, I picked her up, and I said, ‘I’ve got you. I'm not going to let you go.'' However, exiting through the hallway proved impossible due to the dense smoke, posing a risk of smoke inhalation and burns. Fire Captain Greg Soria and his crew devised a daring plan to extricate the girl. They smashed through the bedroom window, creating a passage to safety. 'When I saw light, when I saw the window and I saw another one of my partners outside, Captain Soria and his team, I knew then it was going to be a really good outcome,' said Turner. 'And I was elated.' The girl was safely passed through the window and carried to safety by paramedics who immediately transported her to the hospital. Her family reports she is expected to be released soon. 'That's my little angel,' Romero said. 'I just want to say, ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you.' … Thank you for saving my daughter's life, and my life.' The family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help them rebuild their lives following the devastating fire. Information on the fundraiser can be found by clicking or tapping here
