San Antonio experienced its second consecutive hottest year on record in 2024, with an average annual temperature of 73.2 degrees, surpassing the previous record set in 2023. While 2024 had fewer days with extreme heat compared to 2023, temperatures remained consistently above average throughout the year, contributing to the record-breaking average.
A year ago, San Antonio was making headlines for enduring its hottest year on record in 2023. Then as we moved into 2024, meteorologists anticipated that the unseasonable heat would continue, but we also had some hope that 2024 wouldn’t be quite as brutal as the previous year. Yet, after producing consistently above-average temperatures throughout the year, 2024 proved our expectations to be false hope.
San Antonio reached 102 degrees on May 25, more than a month earlier than the average date of the first 100-degree day of the year. During July, heavy rainfall and ample cloud cover kept temperatures mostly in check. However, monthly temperature averages were still marginally above the climate-normal. Summer-like temperatures extended well into fall. October was more than 7 degrees above average, making it the hottest October ever in San Antonio.
