The North East Independent School District board is considering a plan to close three schools to cope with declining enrollment and a record budget deficit.
Grappling with dwindling enrollment and a budget crisis, the North East Independent School District is the latest in Bexar County to consider closing schools to reduce costs. At a board meeting Monday night, school officials presented a recommendation to shutter three schools after detailing the revenue losses and heightened expenses saddling the district.
board approves school closure plan after emotional debate The schools that could be closed are Driscoll Middle School, Wilshire Elementary School and Clear Spring Elementary School. They were selected by the district’s efficiency committee, a task force of parents, community members and staff selected by the board and superintendent in September to improve the effectiveness of NEISD facilities.
San Antonio school systems’ outlook for 2025? Big money problems. Maika said combining campuses would “instantly lower the cost per student to educate at any of our campuses” due to lower overhead expenses. School officials hesitated to provide a cost-saving estimate but it could be over $3 million. Board members appeared to accept on the inevitability of closing schools.
