The San Antonio home and the family’s dairy operation was on pastureland that had been owned by the Steves family.

I used to live on Skyridge Street on the South Side . Our neighbor, Rocco A. Errico , was a pastor at a nondenominational church on the 1800 block of Steve s Avenue. The property covered over an acre, and a two-story plantation house was at the back. In 1969, maybe 1970, the house caught fire and was demolished. The pastor’s son, Steve , said they called the house “ Steve s House.” I think maybe Steve s Avenue is named for the house’s original owner.

German-English school building still in use It was owned from 1891 to 1895 by the Park Terrace Land Co., which cratered when it didn’t sell. According to research by local historian Maria Watson Pfeiffer, Johanna Steves purchased 740.49 acres for $66,100; while Elmira Gillis bought 238.68 acres for $12,848 and conveyed 54 acres in December 1895 to daughter Edna and son-in-law W.A. Lewis, who sold it to Alexander J. Uhl for $3,000.

San Antonio’s Highland Park got an early boost from streetcars and schools Alex Uhl and his English-born wife, Agnes, had 14 children, for whom they built a three-story, 17-room house with wraparound verandas on three sides of the first and second floors and a conservatory that spanned the remaining side.

San Antonio’s German-style shooting club of the 1800s-1900s sharpened skills, built community Although the family had moved often during the last two decades of the 19th century, this was the place they put down roots. In 1940, Alex Sr. divided most of the land among his surviving children and continued to live in the house until his death in 1954.

As city grew, firefighting got more advanced It was about 2 a.m. when the fire broke out at 1518 Steves Ave., as the house was by then addressed. Second Assistant Fire Chief R.E. Fritz told the Light, Jan. 19, 1970, that “The flames were so hot when we arrived, water didn’t even faze it.” The blaze destroyed most of the house and its contents, including an antique piano and a stained glass window. Damages were estimated at $50,000.
