The orchestra will manage and operate most of the Scottish Rite Cathedral downtown -- and eventually perform there.
The partnership that will give the San Antonio Philharmonic its very own home in the Scottish Rite Cathedral downtown is now official. A small group of musicians, patrons and donors gathered in the lobby of the ornate building to watch the signing of documents spelling out arrangements between the Philharmonic and the San Antonio Scottish Rite Library and Museum, the nonprofit that owns the building.
' The idea of giving the city's orchestra a home in the cathedral goes back decades, but it never gelled in the lifetime of the San Antonio Symphony. The symphony folded in 2022 following years of financial turmoil. Many symphony musicians came together to create the Philharmonic in the wake of the symphony's collapse. Bassoonist Brian Petkovich, one of the founders of the Philharmonic, remembers playing in the Scottish Rite about 25 years ago with the symphony.
