The incident involved profanity and intimidating language, leading to a draft resolution with consequences.

Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones publicly apologized at City Hall on Tuesday as she faces a possible censure vote later this week over a confrontation with District 1 Councilwoman Sukh Kaur. SAN ANTONIO - Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones publicly apologized at City Hall on Tuesday as she faces a possible censure vote later this week over a confrontation with District 1 Councilwoman Sukh Kaur.

In her first public comments since Monday’s special City Council meeting, Jones held a tense news conference Tuesday morning and said she was sorry for “hurting the feelings” of Kaur. “Look, where I come from and how I was raised when you make a mistake, you apologize,” Jones said. The apology follows a formal complaint filed by Kaur stemming from a Feb. 5 confrontation. Kaur has said Jones used profanity and intimidating language directed at her during a break in a meeting earlier this month, while city officials — including City Manager Erik Walsh — were present. The confrontation involved public safety at the Bonham Exchange. Jones said she had already apologized privately and wanted to make the apology public. “I have apologized to her privately, but I wanted to make sure everybody knew that I had done the right thing and certainly apologized for hurting her feelings,” Jones said. An independent investigation later found Mayor Jones violated the City Council code of conduct, as well as policies related to workplace harassment and violence. A draft resolution calls for formal consequences, including a written apology, in-person leadership training, and that Jones step aside for three months as chair of the Governance Committee. Jones said she does not intend to remove herself from the committee role, saying, “I think that is separate and distinct from what I do on the governance committee.” Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran said the council cannot force the mayor to take the steps outlined in the draft resolution and that council members are considering next steps. “This apology for hurting people's feelings when it clearly the administrative directives and the code of conduct, we were not addressing hurt feelings. We were addressing her behavior towards a colleague that made it uncomfortable,” Viagran said. Councilman Marc Whyte said he saw Kaur after the incident and that she said it was “bad.” Whyte urged the council to act at Friday’s meeting. “This is not how 11 people are supposed to work together to do the business of the people. Let's get this done on Friday and let's get back to work for the people of San Antonio,” Whyte said. Kaur said she is recusing herself from this week’s censure proceedings to maintain the integrity of the independent investigation.'This is too far': Texts show late-night exchanges between Rep.
