Jayveon Johnson was convicted of first-degree murder and aggravated robbery for his role in a deadly robbery attempt that left David Rezentes dead.
A San Antonio man has been sentenced to prison for his role in a 2023 drug deal robbery that tragically resulted in the death of one man. Jayveon Johnson, 23, was found guilty of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of David Rezentes. He was also convicted of aggravated robbery of Richard Diaz. On Monday, a Bexar County jury sentenced Johnson to 10 years for the murder charge and five years for the aggravated robbery. Both sentences will be served concurrently.
The deadly incident unfolded on March 25, 2023, in the 3200 block of El Paso Street in San Antonio. According to prosecutors, Johnson directed his girlfriend, Mariah Desire Cabrera, 21, to fire the fatal shot that killed Rezentes during a botched robbery attempt. Cabrera was sentenced to 35 years in prison in October after pleading guilty to the murder. At the time of the shooting, Johnson resided with his friend, 21-year-old Jonathan Garza, who is also facing charges related to the incident. Prosecutors allege that Johnson, Garza, Cabrera, and a couple of other men conspired to rob Diaz, known to sell Xanax. During the robbery, prosecutors stated that Cabrera and another woman engaged Diaz through his car window while Johnson and the others surrounded the vehicle with guns, demanding his possessions. Johnson, according to prosecutors, specifically instructed Cabrera to shoot Rezentes in the chest. Despite managing to run down the street, Rezentes succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by emergency medical services. Police discovered Diaz's vehicle running with the driver's side door open. They also located a single bullet hole on the passenger side door. On the passenger seat, officers found a small bag containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine. During his police interview, Johnson admitted to being present at the scene as a lookout during the shooting and confessed to being armed, as stated by prosecutors.
