San Antonio-made Toyota Tundra hybrid posts best-ever sales despite the company’s July sales dropping 8% overall.
Toyota ’s U.S. sales were down 8.3% in July, but hybrids produced at the company’s San Antonio plant posted gains including the best-ever month for the Tundra pickup truck. Year to date, Toyota Motor North America’s sales are up 11% despite the slump in July. The Japanese auto giant’s hybrid vehicles continue to perform well in the U.S. , representing 47.6% of total sales volume for July, the highest percentage ever.

Toyota says $532 million expansion in San Antonio is to build drivetrain parts Toyota has sold 536,868 electrified vehicles this year, up 64% year over year on a volume basis. That represents more than 39% of total sales, up from less than 27% this time last year. In all, Toyota sold 153,040 vehicles in July. Sales of the regular gas-engine Tundra were up 18% for the month, while sales of its hybrid counterpart were up a record 40.8% for the month.
100,000 recalled San Antonio-made Toyota Tundra pickups need new engines The hyrbid-only Sequioa, which is made in the San Antonio plant using the same frame as the Tundra, reported nearly 34% in sales growth in July. Electric sales were led by the hyrbid Camry, followed by the RAV 4. Sales of the traditional engine Camry and RAV4 were down over the month, but they still led the automaker in sales totals across its fleet.
