San Antonio-made Toyota Tundra is being tested by Australian driver, pickup nears launch down under

Toyota Motor Corp. is inching closer to expanding the market for its San Antonio -made hybrid Tundra pickup to Australia, a Toyota Australia executive said this week. The automaker announced in December that up to 300 Tundras had been shipped Down Under, where they were reconfigured to move the driver’s controls to the right side. The trucks were to be delivered to customers by April.

San Antonio-built vehicles gain as Toyota deliveries jump on sales of lower-priced cars, small SUVs “I’m kind of hoping we might have some news by the end of the year,” Hanley told Australian outlet Car Expert on Monday. Hanley told the outlet that testing so far has been promising. If Toyota moves ahead with the plan, the vehicle would continue to be made in the San Antonio plant and then sent to Australia to be re-engineered for Australian drivers. The move is part of a broader trend of U.S.

Toyota says $532 million expansion in San Antonio is to build drivetrain parts “We know there is a demand for full-size pickups like the Tundra but we wanted to ensure that the local right-hand drive conversion and the vehicle as a whole met Toyota’s exacting standards for quality and the needs of our customers,” Hanley said in a statement in December. The Australian automotive market has been growing the footprint of its U.S. “utes” — or utility trucks — over the past decade.

Toyota begins producing 2022 Tundra at San Antonio plant To be driven in Australia, the Texas-made Tundras need to have their steering wheels, pedals and other controls moved to the right-hand side of the vehicle. That requires several other parts either being modified or installed in the remanufacturing process: components for the steering rack, instrument panel, firewall, headlights, cabling, harnesses, front seats, carpet and trim.
