Judge Christine Hortick says she will go rogue and run her own docket for pretrial hearings. She says central scheduling is inefficient and unfair to litigants.

A Bexar County judge has provoked a furor on the civil court bench by vowing to pull out of a 62-year-old system in which pretrial hearings are assigned to different judges rather than staying with the same jurist all the way through the case. State District Judge Christine Hortick says the Presiding Court system is inefficient and costs litigants time and money because it's possible for a case to come before a different judge each time a pretrial issue arises.

Herr Valdés, who also is the judge in the 386th Juvenile District Court, said she would not authorize any change that would give an individual judge 'a means to circumvent' the local rules. In an interview, Senior District Judge Sid Harle, who presides over the multicounty Fourth Administrative Judicial Region in South Texas, said that although he understands why Hortick would want her own individual docket, it would require a change in the local rules.
