Claudia Guerra, the city’s cultural historian, opens a community discussion on Black identity and history at the Carver Library on Saturday morning.SAN ANTONIO — Defining historical ‘Black identity’ in San Antonio isn’t easy.
“While we as a people of the African diaspora have overcome great and terrible odds, we still have a very long way to go,” he said. “San Antonio Black history is rich. And it’s not just located on the East Side. It’s throughout the city, and it’s ingrained in the fabric of our community.” In discussing terminology, assistant history professor Pamela Walker at Texas A&M University-San Antonio said “colored” and “negro” were used interchangeably to describe African Americans throughout the 1800s and early 1900s. By the 1940s, “negro” became the preferred term as a result of writings from the Harlem Renaissance. In the 1960s, “Black” emerged as a term of pride, but it stirred some generational tension.
