Brewery operators in San Antonio are grappling with a host of challenges post-pandemic.
Before the pandemic, customers flocked to Mad Pecker Brewing Co. for pints and pizza after work or on the weekend. Nearly five years after the onset of the health crisis, they have yet to come back to the Northwest Side brewpub, and owner Jason Gonzales isn’t sure why. “We used to pack the house almost Monday to Sunday and now it’s like we just pray that the weekends are busy enough to get us through the week,” he said.

It could be that more people are working from home and just aren’t heading from the office to happy hour with colleagues anymore. Or it could be that enthusiasm for craft beer is waning and people are gravitating toward other beverages. Food sales now overshadow the brewery’s beer receipts.
Second Pitch Beer Company announces its award-winning brewery is closing for good Weathered Souls Brewing Co. closed in September after eight years in business, citing “financial pressures” that became too tough to bear. Second Pitch Beer Co., which opened in 2020, shut its doors in March amid financial difficulties caused by an expansion and decreasing sales. Busted Sandal Brewing Co. also shuttered its three locations in October, 11 years after the first one opened.

During the pandemic, some operators raced to package and sell beer to-go to keep sales flowing, Baker said. Taprooms and brewpubs have reopened in the wake of the health crisis but customers still want six-packs to take home.
