San Antonio experienced a rainy, cold Thursday with temperatures 23 degrees below normal, avoiding expected sleet and ice. However, more than 2,700 CPS Energy customers faced power outages. While the rain is expected to subside, a hard freeze is predicted for Friday night into Saturday morning, with temperatures dipping to the upper 20s.
A rainy, cold Thursday ended in San Antonio with the city and most of the surrounding region avoiding expected sleet and other winter precipitation. More than 2,700 CPS Energy customers experienced power outages at 9 p.m., down from about 4,700 earlier in the evening. By 11:30 p.m., the number dwindled to fewer than 150 as utility crews addressed the outages, the largest of which impacted about 1,600 customers in the Northwood Hills neighborhood.
Temperatures in San Antonio only reached 40 degrees Thursday afternoon, about 23 degrees below normal for January 9th. A Winter Weather Advisory remained in effect for communities to the north until 6 a.m. Friday. The rain continued overnight before stalling Friday morning, bringing temperatures in the mid-to-upper 30s to San Antonio and closer to 30 degrees in places like Rocksprings, Kerrville, and Fredericksburg. Afternoon highs will reach 47 degrees in San Antonio and around 40 in those Hill Country cities as the rain subsides. However, as the showers move out, a hard freeze is expected to settle in Friday night into Saturday morning. Residents in the city can expect to wake up to morning lows in the upper 20s, some of the coldest temperatures experienced this season. Residents are advised to take extra care to protect their pipes, pets, and plants. While the rain will largely subside, with no strong chances of precipitation expected next week, a cold rain is forecast for much of the area Thursday through Friday morning. Near widespread rainfall amounts between 0.5 inches and 2 inches are expected, with heavier amounts along and east of the I-35 corridor. Temperatures are expected to return to more seasonal afternoon highs next week, although morning lows will still be in the upper 30s and low 40s on most days. There's even the potential for a 70-degree day the following weekend, with minimal rain chances even on cloudy days
